CNPC Tubular Goods Research Institute (TGRI), founded in 1981 and located in the southern suburb of Xi’an, is directly subordinated to China National Petroleum Corporation. It is a poly-technical center, integrating scientific research, quality and technical supervision, engineering technical services in oil tubular goods engineering field. It is the advisory staff that provides decision making support for oil pipe engineering, and also the research & development center for creative technology in petroleum oil tubular goods engineering. It is the detection and evaluation center for quality and safety of oil tube, and also the technical center for technical support and service of major pipeline projects and oil & gas field exploration and development projects.

    The original name of “CNPC Tubular Goods Research Institute” was “CNPC Tubular Goods Research Center”. In April 2010, CNPC Tubular Goods Research Institute was approved to be renamed as "CNPC Tubular Goods Research Institute" by China National Petroleum Corporation, abbreviated to "TGRI". In May 2010, TGRI was approved to join in Petro China Company Limited and was also named as "Petro China Tubular Goods Research Institute".

    The main business of TGRI includes three aspects: scientific research, quality and technological supervision and engineering technological services of the tubular goods engineering, and the institute is also undertaking a large number of scientific research tasks, including the projects of the National Natural Science Fund, the 973 Program on basic research, and CNPC's programs in application-oriented basic research and technological development. The basic research involves such areas as oil well pipe and string mechanics, line pipe and high performance pipeline steel, safety evaluation and assessment of line pipe and corrosion and prevention of oil tubular goods. Meanwhile, the institute's technical service in oil tubular goods engineering covers standardization in oil tubular goods engineering, quality inspection and assessment of oil tubular goods, failure analysis of oil tubular goods and equipment, mill supervision & construction supervision of oil tubular goods and related products, test & safety assessment of oil pipeline and pressure vessels, anticorrosion design & anticorrosion engineering for oil industry, and technical consultation & service in oil tubular goods engineering, etc.

    With the tenet of "Innovation, Long-term, Rigorousness, Impartiality", TGRI is dedicated to trinity synergetic development of technology innovation, research and development, quality technical supervision and engineering technical service. Since the foundation of 30 years and more, TGRI gets fruitful achievements and completes more than 200 national and provincial projects. Among them, 13 projects have won national technical award, more than 100 projects have won provincial award, and over 140 standards are revised and developed, 7 standards are adopted by API and completes nearly 10,000 quality supervision projects, over 1500 failure analysis projects, which both provide technical assurance for the great pipeline projects construction of West-east Gas pipeline project, Central Asia project etc. and also for key oil & gas field exploration & development such as Tarim, Xin Jiang etc.

    TGRI insists on the development strategy of opening and cooperation, cooperated with many famous institutes and corporations home and abroad to make a win-win situation. Over 10 large oil and gas fields, over 20 great mills and pipe-making companies and universities cooperated with TGRI and conduct compressive and profound cooperation in oil tubular goods engineer. At the same time, over 20 famous research institutes and corporation in America, Canada, Japan, Russia, Italy, Argentina, Norway etc. become the steady joint partners of TGRI.

    The institute has a contingent of capable and efficient personnel for scientific research and a batch of superb testing equipment. At present, the center has 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 17 experts with outstanding contributions confirmed by the State, Province or Ministry, 80 professors and senior engineers and 40 doctors, 70% of the employees hold Master's or above degrees. The center commands nearly 400 sets of advanced instruments and equipment, and has 25 qualification certificates for quality, standardization, safety and failure analysis, granted respectively by international, national and CNPC's competent authorities.

    Through great effort, TGRI enjoys a good reputation both at home and abroad for its technology, personnel, equipment and qualification certificates, and becomes the authority of the field of oil tubular goods engineering.
